The Aquarium and Reptilarium is housed in the Palazzo del Turismo.Following a course more than 500 meters long, there are displays of many very rare tropical animals from all over the world: 24 aquariums house 250 salt and freshwater fish, 15 water terrariums with various species of extremely rare water turtles, 10 terrariums with tortoises of varying sizes, including the dangerous snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) and the extraordinary alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temminckii), the largest specimen in Italy. Other rare species may be admired along the course of the exhibit: from the most beautiful and colored to the most dangerous tropical fish: the deadly stonefish, the dangerous piranha and the moray eel or the enchanting red lionfish (Pterois volitans) and the beautiful flower fish.
Giant reptiles up to five meters long, strange pythons, boas, anacondas, and various kinds of snakes. Geckos from all over the world, like the giant gecko (Tarentola gigas gigas, the only pair in Europe). Water dragons, iguanas, like the rhinoceros iguana, the green iguana and extremely rare saurians: skinks, such as the giant skink from the Solomon Islands (Coruccia zebrata, the only pair in Europe), blue-tongued skinks, tegus, the frilled lizard, and the plated lizard.
Nice and particular frogs and toads.
And also: tropical spiders and poisonous scorpions, very special insects like the stick insects and the leaf insects (extraordinary exemplars of mimicry), the praying mantis, beetles and many other kinds.
The permanent exhibit is enriched by the Butterfly Gallery, which cover a 75 sq. m. area. It is a section specially dedicated to the world of butterflies, a tropical garden with real plants and live butterflies that are born in a veritable nursery and are free to fly about. The public can walk amidst the most beautiful and highly colored butterflies.
The result of the passion of the organizers themselves, the exhibit is directed at both enthusiasts and the curious, but especially to those who love animals, promoting respect for and “non-abandonment” of them.
